WORSHIP AND MUSIC

Music at Trinity Lutheran Church is a vibrant and exciting contribution to the whole worship of the church. Its form and style vary according to the Liturgical Season of the Church Year, the theme of the day, and the choirs, which are providing the vocal music.

Trinity primarily employs the Lutheran Book of Worship, Setting One (Advent through Easter Seasons) and Setting Two (1/2 of Pentecost Season) and a custom setting from the new Evangelical Lutheran Worship (1/2 of Pentecost Season). The congregation is familiar with the Settings and does sing the appointed liturgical responses to the Kyrie, Hymn of Praise, Salutation, and The Great Thanksgiving. The Psalmody has is intoned, responsively. The hymnal supplement "With One Voice" has moved into regular use. Trinity pre-prints each worship service liturgy and all hymns in their entirety for ease of use.

TRINITY'S CHOIRS:

CHERUB CHOIR - Ms. Katie Trego - director; Mrs. Jane Sutton - accompanist.

This choir is for our youngest singers, from about age four through second grade. Cherub Choir rehearsals are Wednesday evenings, beginning at 6:00 pm. This is a very enjoyable choir to hear and watch!

CHILDREN'S CHOIR - Mrs. Babette Wenerd, Director.

This choir is for grades three through six, and is a very enthusiastic group of young singers. Frequently they are accompanied by percussion and other instruments. They often sing with the Cherub Choir. Rehearsals are Wednesday evenings at 6:00 pm.

YOUTH CHOIR - Mrs. Wenerd, Director

Vocal singers from grade seven through High School age compose this group. It deals with more difficult music with the enthusiasm and flair that only teens can muster! Rehearsals are at 6:30 pm, Wednesdays.

SENIOR CHOIR - Mr. Robert Eyer, Jr., Director.

This is the "adult" choir of the church. It specializes in singing multi-voice, multi-part music from traditional to more contemporary depending on the season of the Church Year or theme of the day. Trinity's Senior Choir has some 30+ vocalists. Rehearsals are Wednesdays, 7:00 pm.

JOURNEY TOGETHER CONTEMPORARY MUSIC ENSEMBLE - Carlenda Owens, director.

This very accomplished ensemble of eleven musicians and vocalists provide the support music for Trinity's weekly Contemporary Worship Service. Rehearsals are Wednesdays, 6:00 PM in the Social Hall.

About Director of Music, Robert Eyer, Jr.

Mr. Robert Eyer, Jr. has served as Trinity's Director of Music and organist since 1977, over 25 years. He is widely known in Pennsylvania and Maryland as an organist of exemplary quality, gifted in music selection and performance. He is further known as a talented church liturgical organist: music is crisp, well executed and thoroughly prepared each week. He employs Trinity's 39 rank Moller pipe organ to its fullest potential. His pedal work is a sight to behold (or if one cannot see, ...to listen to)!  He holds a B.S. in Education and a M.A. in Organ Performance from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Robert Eyer, Jr. is renowned in the Chambersburg and wider Franklin County area as "the" concert organist on Chambersburg's Capital Theatre Pipe Organ! Mr. Eyer is the keyboard artist on a recent compact disc recording on the Capitol Theatre Organ, "Puttin' on the Pipes."

LITURGICAL WORSHIP AT TRINITY

Trinity is "visitor friendly!" Please visit the "Especially for Guests" page.

Trinity generally follows the Unified Liturgical Calendar and appointed lectionary for the Revised three-year cycle. The Pastors occasionally offer seasonally timely "preaching series".

Church members regularly serve as Lay Readers for the appointed Old Testament, responsive Psalm reading, and Epistle Lessons of the Day. The Psalmody is responsively sung between a Cantor and Congregation employing the "tone" of the day.

Trained Lay Communion Assistants serve in addition to Trinity's clergy in the distribution of Holy Communion.

Holy Communion is celebrated Sunday mornings, alternating between the 8:30 and 11:00 services, every other week. Distribution is by means of bread and pre-filled cups of wine, with the communicants kneeling or standing at the Chancel railing. For those with physical handicaps, the elements will be brought to their seating location (just notify an usher prior to the distribution). The Saturday 5 P. M., Wednesday noon, and all Contemporary worship services always celebrate Holy Communion.

At least one of Trinity's choirs sings at each Sunday morning service.

An Illustrated Children's message is given for the children (toddlers through fifth grade each week). The children are invited to come to the Chancel area for their own special time with the pastor.

FESTIVAL WORSHIP SERVICES AT TRINITY

Festival worship is celebrated at Trinity on the major Festivals of the Church Year: Transfiguration, Palm Sunday, Easter, Pentecost, Reformation Sunday, All Saints Day, and Christmas Eve.

On those festival days the worship is accentuated with the use of a processional cross, torch bearers, occasional banners, choir processions, and other liturgical appointments.

Seasonal flowers festively decorate the Sanctuary on Easter, Pentecost and Christmas. Pew candelabra illumine the church for Trinity's two Christmas Eve services. Trinity's 'candlelight service' is renowned throughout Chambersburg as one of particular beauty and meaning. It is celebrated as each worshiper lights an individual candle at the conclusion of the Christmas Eve service, for the singing of Silent Night.

Freedom Celebration (Sunday closest to July 4) is a semi-patriotic theme, observing our responsibilities as citizens, and praising God for the grace-gifts of the greatest freedom in Christ. The pledge to the flag precedes the service, and national hymns are selected for the day's events.

Trinity regularly schedules the pledge to the American Flag prior to the worship services closest to Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Veteran's Day to honor our service men and women and as a public statement of our good citizenship.

VOLUNTEER SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES

Members are invited and encouraged to share their talents and abilities in the following worship and music ministries: vocalists in one of Trinity's choirs, accompanists to one of the choirs, instrumentalists - solo or ensemble, lay readers, communion assistants, ushers, acolytes, crucifers, torch bearers, communion set-up or clean-up, bake bread for communion, banner design and construction, festival decoration, scheduling and coordination of Trinity's many volunteers.

SATURDAY EVENING 5:00 PM WORSHIP

In 1996 Trinity initiated a non-Sunday worship setting as an alternative for those who could not attend the traditional Sunday morning worship services. This service includes a less formal, abbreviated liturgy, full sermon, and weekly Holy Communion. It is held in Trinity's Chapel area. Music accompaniment on piano (occasionally organ) is for prelude, hymns and offertory. The service is spoken using a preprinted liturgy. Average weekly attendance is now in the mid 50’s for this service.

This service also has no scheduled flowers or other pollen producing flora for those with allergy sensitivities. The Chapel is seasonally air conditioned.

WEDNESDAY 12:15 WORSHIP

In 2001 Trinity initiated a weekly noontime weekly worship service. Many of our families are required to work every weekend. Thus, to serve the changing needs of the entire community this service is offered over the lunch hour, mid-week. It features an abbreviated worship outline, pastoral meditation, anointing for healing and Holy Communion. This worship is conducted in Trinity's Chapel.

JOURNEY TOGETHER CONTEMPORARY WORSHIP

In 2004 Trinity initiated a monthly Contemporary formal worship service held in the Social Hall. This worship features a instrumental and vocal support ensemble, video projection and music selections of a more Christian - contemporary nature. Average weekly attendance for this service is now in the low 50's. In June 2007 this worship experience began a weekly schedule in the Social Hall.

MID WEEK LENTEN SERVICES

Wednesday evening special worship services are scheduled during the weeks of Lent cooperatively with the Chambersburg LARC (Lutheran, Anglican, Roman Catholic) Covenant congregations.
